A CRM records the opportunities a company knows about. It cannot, on its own, show everything customers have considered before they speak to sales.
That distinction matters when a leadership team asks why deals are stalling. The explanation may involve qualification or follow-up. It may also involve a preference formed earlier, an unclear proposition, weak evidence or a buying case that was never established.
Look beyond the sales stages
For a small set of comparable wins, losses and no-decisions, examine how the customer defined the need, found alternatives and developed confidence in a supplier. Compare that account with the CRM record.
Where do the two stories diverge? Which questions did the customer need answered before the opportunity appeared? What evidence was missing, and who should have provided it?
Connect the commercial response
The resulting decisions may concern positioning, account development, demand generation, customer evidence or sales progression. They should be connected around the customer’s decision, with shared ownership across marketing and sales.
The pipeline remains useful. It becomes more informative when interpreted alongside the journey that produced it.
